readme.txt, navpak.txt, mapsetup.txt, chart.txt, nmea.txt,
metafile.txt, and faq.txt.
SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
The demo copy of NavPak is compiled to use a math coprocessor, and will
run on a 386DX, 486DX or Pentium computer, using Windows 95, or NT.
Registered copies can be supplied for computers without a coprocessor
(SX CPU). Copies are available for Windows 3.1.
Unless otherwise specified, registered copies are compiled to use a math
coprocessor, since they will run faster with less memory.
NAVPAK HISTORY
NavPak was written in 1984 to run on computers using the CPM operating
system, and Timex Sinclair computers. These computers were some of the earliest
portables. During the later half of the 1980s, NavPak was translated to run
on IBM clones running MS DOS, and programmable graphic calculators. Much of
the program development was done by the author during a 7 year circumnavigation
on his 24' sailboat. The first half of the circumnavigation was done using
NavPak on a Timex Sinclair, and the second half was done with NavPak running
on various graphic calculators.
The early versions of NavPak excercised the spherical trigonometric engine
and graphic plotting routines, which are the basis of the latest Windows
versions. Lacking a Graphical User Interface, and the power to load large images,
the early versions provided celestial sight reduction and plotting and great
circle points, on a plotting sheet type screen. In practical use at sea, these
programs showed that they helped to reduce errors and speed up the process of
navigation.
In the early 1990s, NavPak was translated once again to run with MS Windows,
version 3.1. Shortly after Windows 95 was released, NavPak-32 was developed.
The 32 bit capability of this operating system gave a huge boost to the graphic
display speed, and helped facilitate overlapped in/out of NMEA serial data.
NavPak-16 is the final version for Windows 3.1, and will not be developed
further, however it will continue to be available for users that do not have
Windows 95 or NT. All future development will be with NavPak-32.
CURRENT STATUS
Autopilot, radar, and current set/drift routines have been added to NavPak-32,
and are in the beta testing phase. These routines have been tested with a NMEA
data generator and appear to be bug free. Beta copies of NavPak-32 have been
distributed to registered users that have expressed an interest in testing.
If any changes to the program are required, then free upgrades will be sent to
registered users of NavPak-32.
DISCLAIMER
Since we have no control over how NavPak will be used, this program is
to be used at your own risk. Bitmap charts provided with the demo, release
copies, or by request, are not kept up to date, so they should be used with
current paper charts. Bitmaps supplied are not considered complete coverage
of a particular chart or area.
The main underlying routines of NavPak were originally registered as a
copyright, under the names of "NAVPAK" and "STARFIND" in 1984.
Registration number: TXu 158-508, 1984, Register of Copyrights, USA.
Not affiliated with Navpac.
NavPak for Windows has been throughly tested and believed to be error
free. It would be surprising if there are any bugs in this program,
however it's not beyond the realm of possibility. If you find any, please
let us know. Registered users will receive a new copy if an error is
discovered which affects navigation.
